About New England 4 Wheelers, Inc.:

The New England 4 Wheelers, Inc. is a family oriented four-wheel drive club created to promote the sport of recreational four wheel driving on primitive roads. Vehicles are limited to Jeep type sport utility vehicles that are narrow, lightweight and agile like Jeep CJs, YJs, TJs, Cherokees, Suzukis, Defender 90s, Scouts, and other vehicles of this genere.
Vehicle size is limited to 70 inches at its widest point. There is no limit to wheelbase length, but it is recommended not to exceed 106 inches due to the breakover angle. A tow hook is mandatory in the front of the vehicle. A hook or attachment point is required for the rear. All vehicles MUST carry a tow strap with loops (no metal hooks) rated at least 20,000 pounds, at least 20 feet in length, a 40 channel CB radio, fire extinguisher, full size spare tire, and first aid kit. Metal whip antennas are not allowed. Maximum antenna length is not to exceed six feet in length. Open topped vehicles must have a rolbar. All vehicles must have seat belts for all occupants. Minimum tire size is 31 inches. Maximum tire size allowed is 38 inches. A spare tire of equal diameter to your road tires is mandatory.

New England 4 Wheelers, Inc. bases its trail ratings on a scale as follows:
* Scenic (2-wheel drive in low range, easy going..sorta!)
* Technical (good off-road driving skills, 4X4 in good shape)
* Challenging (a locker, ground clearance, good traction tires)
* Extreme (2 lockers, winch, 33+ tires..a spare vehicle, parts)
* Mild to Wild…(all of the above)
Most stock vehicles can handle a rating of technical or challenging with some help. Your discretion and realistic evaluation of your ability is advised.
New England 4 Wheelers Inc. plans trail rides from April through November. We are idle during the winter month with the exception of February when we hold our Board of Directors meeting. March has our annual kick-off party. Your monthly newsletter will inform you of all club events throughout the year. You are encouraged to write an article, trip report, or comment for the newsletter at any time, we welcome your input into YOUR club!

History:

Blake Taggart and Richard Banfield formed the New England 4 Wheelers, Inc. in December 1988. New England 4 Wheelers, Inc. was incorporated on June 4th, 1993 by Richard Banfield, Roberta Banfield, and Ed Boivin and is renewed yearly in October. Rich Banfield and Rick McAree created the club logo that was sponsored by the Jeep Gallery in 1989-90. New By-Laws were written by Bill Barnes; fine tuned, enacted upon, and approved by the Board of Directors on Sept. 28, 1997, and have been updated through 2001. 1999 saw NE4WIs first open to all "Trail Challenge". A highly successful event coordinated through the efforts of Scott & Sherry Hatch and Steve & Peg Nordby. 2000 had the 2nd Annual Trail Challenge in May, bigger and better than the first. Unfortunately the enforcement of laws in New Hampshire put a stop to the 2001 event. 2000 also saw its 2nd BBQ in September. Club elections for President had for the first time a woman, Peg Nordby, run in the election. 2001 saw Bill Barnes and Carl Merrick organize a highly successful clean up coordinated with the towns of Florida and North Adams. All area clubs were asked to participate. We also saw a highly successful 3rd annual BBQ run coordinated by Steve Ballou. All left over food was donated to the local homeless shelter.
